In RAID6, you lose 2 drives due to parity. In RAID10, you would lose 2 drives due to mirroring. However, since you have a 4-bay NAS, RAID10 is better than RAID6 since RAID10 will result in the same amount of usable space with superior reading and writing performance. RAID6 has replaced RAID5 as the standard parity RAID for platter drives. If you were going with SSDs, then RAID5 becomes a consideration again. For this purpose in a mixed environment, use WD Red and maybe expect a little drop in recordings if a bit error happened. Summary: please don't use WD Purple to store any business data on them due to non-existing bit error correction. The rest of the WD Purple is similar to all other drives, they are also able to used in any RAID environment. And I bet that within this time gap, the car number plate or face to record has passed on of the cameras. Within surveillance, all cameras would be disconnected then and would not be recorded - as the drive is not present. Imagine if there would be a bit error WD Red would disconnect from the controller for up to 5 seconds to try to correct this bit error. The WD Purple is different to WD Red as the Purple drives DON'T DO any bit error correction! Generally, I opted not to upload images and videos while I was away from home, as the original quality meant a single picture could run me around 10MB, while a minute-long video is hundreds of megabytes.Surveillance drives from WD are called WD Purple, available with up to 8 TB per drive, article number WDx0PURX with lower x = 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 for the TB value. The synchronization process is usually fast, though that'd depend on your network equipment when you're at home and your max upload speed when you're out and about. It also has both a camera roll and a folder view, allowing you to change the timescale and see all of your photos simultaneously.
Most importantly, it natively supports the iPhone's Live Photos so it allows me to relive those precious moments that are otherwise lost. It's in beta, currently, but to me it feels like an excellent alternative to Google Photos and other similar cloud galleries.
With all that talk about Photos, I guess Synology's up and coming Photos app deserves a mention. What’s more, a recent newborn addition to the family almost certainly meant that my own data is only about to grow in size - and importance. Add to that my local collection of nearly 120GB of photos and videos that I’ve taken with my mirrorless camera and you get a pretty decent chunk of data that’s both irreplaceable and hard to move around that easily. My Google Photos came in at 92.97GB, which comprises around 6 years’ worth of photos and videos I’ve mostly taken with various phones. Admittedly, the stark price difference in comparison with the seemingly cheap cloud storage is definitely there, but hear me out - the positives outweigh the sticker price shock. The grand total for the whole shebang? Around $500, give or take.

It Ultimately, the overall interface and software suite of Synology’s DSM operating system tipped the scales in its favor.
